Update:'American Idol' Fantasia Barrino is out of Soul of the City; festival adds third night
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A former-winner of 'American Idol' will headline this year's 'Soul of the City' celebration at Grand Rapids Rosa Parks Circle on Labor Day weekend.
Fantasia Barrino, winner of the TV-talent competition in 2004, will perform Sept. 2 as part of the urban festival that includes a variety of food and cultural exhibits as well as music.
'I think her fans will be happy to hear her,' said event organizer Monica Sparks.
'(Fantasia) was not part of the line-up originally, but boom – it just happened,' she added.
Fantasia's most recent CD, 'Back to Me,' includes the Grammy-winning song 'Bittersweet.' She reportedly has another recording in the works.
Other artists scheduled to perform over the two-day event, which features a variety of musical styles, are One Way featuring Al Hudson, bluesmen Donald Kinsey and Big Daddy Fox and R&B singer Yolanda Lavender.
The complete roster for the Sept. 1 and 2 festival is still being finalized, according to Sparks, director of The Urban Sparks, a local urban marketing and promotional firm.
Although the event is free, Sparks said a concert preferred seating area will be ticketed, $20 for a single day, $30 for both.
Ticket holders receive a T-Shirt as well as a food voucher.
She expects tickets to go on sale this week at Startickets outlets.
Sparks helped bring back 'Soul of the City' last year. The festival had been on hiatus since 2005 when its founder was unable to continue it because of family and business commitments.
Again this year, Sparks plans a health and wellness emphasis with various nonprofit agencies hosting display and information booths.
There is a local organization designated as the event beneficiary this year: The Buster Mathis Foundation, begun by former boxer Buster Mathis Jr. Among other activity, it advocates for foster system children who have 'aged' out of foster care.
'There is a need for this event, and we've got momentum with wind beneath our sails,' said Sparks.
'We're trying to bring continuity and consistency to have this happen every year.'
